What is Phi Theta Kappa?
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges.Since its founding in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has recognized the academic achievements of students in associate-degree programs. The International Honor Society has grown from eight charter chapters in Missouri to more than 1,250 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, and U.S. territorial possessions. Nearly 100,000 of the most outstanding two-year college students are inducted into membership in Phi Theta Kappa each year. Phi Theta Kappa offers students opportunities for engaging in scholarly activities, earning academic scholarships, providing service to the community, developing and practicing leadership skills, and enjoying fellowship with other scholars.
Membership Requirements
Membership shall be by invitation only to students who have completed a minimum of 12 college level credits at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and have attained a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5. Candidates for membership are strongly encouraged to attend the orientation and induction programs. Once inducted, members must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25. Members will be granted one semester in which to regain an average that has fallen below the minimum requirement.
Transfer
Members of chapters from other institutions of higher learning who transfer to Central Pennsylvania’s Community College shall be recognized as members of Alpha Nu Omega upon acceptable verification.
Honorary Membership
Honorary membership shall be granted to persons who have rendered distinguished service and support to Alpha Nu Omega. Honorary members may not vote or hold office. They are, however, permitted to attend all Phi Theta Kappa/Alpha Nu Omega functions but are not required to perform service duties. The Executive Committee shall recommend all candidates for honorary membership to the general membership. Upon approval from the general body, honorary members will be initiated during a new member induction ceremony.
Membership
The term “member” shall refer to active or inactive status, in good standing or not in good standing.
Service Requirements
Members shall be considered in good standing if they complete twenty accepted service points in the established semester. New members are required to complete ten service points for the semester in which they are inducted. Service point requirements may be adjusted at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
Members shall earn two service points for each hour of volunteer service performed at any of the following areas:
- HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College
- Local Communities
- Phi Theta Kappa/Alpha Nu Omega
Members shall receive two service points for each general meeting attended. Points are awarded according to the attendance register signed by each member.
