"Activities designed to implement the Scholarship Hallmark should focus primarily on the 2008-10 Honors Study Topic, "The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences." In addition to incorporating the Honors Study Topic, scholarship activities should also promote scholarship for students and faculty."
Current Scholarships
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship
The JACK KENT Cooke Foundation's Undergraduate Transfer
Scholarships are awarded to the nation's top two-year or community
college students who have financial need. The selection process for
these awards is rigorous and highly competitive, with approximately
50 scholarships awarded each year out of hundreds of nominees.
Prospective candidates must first be nominated by the JKC Faculty
Representative at their two-year schools (nominations are determined
after all applications have been received). The campus deadline for
application submission is January 15, 2010. Students must be
currently enrolled at an accredited US community college or two-year
institution with sophomore status as of December 31, 2009, or be a
recent graduate (since spring 2005).
In addition, applicants must have achieved a cumulative college
grade-point average of 3.50 or better on a 4.0 scale (or the
equivalent) and plan to transfer to a four-year college or
university to commence studies in the fall of 2010.
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Be a current tudent at an accredited US community college or two-year institution with sophomore status by December 31, 2009, or a recent graduate (since spring 2005).
- Plan to enroll full-time in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university in fall 2010.
- Have a cumulative undergraduate grade-point average of 3.50 or better on a scale of 4.0 (or the equivalent).
- Be nominated by his or her two-year institution.
- Have unmet financial need.
- Have not previously been nominated for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.
While the Foundation considers academic excellence first in evaluating candidates, competitive applicants must also demonstrate unmet financial need, which has two components:
- Education costs that are appreciably greater than the total amount of other scholarships or grant awards.
- Insufficient student and family income to meet educational costs.
The Campus deadline is January 15, 2010, two student from each

International Scholarships
Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship – deadline is October 15th.
For students enrolled in registered nursing, respiratory care or
emergency medical services associate degree programs. It awards
$1,000 scholarships for associate degree education to outstanding students
enrolled in registered nursing, respiratory care or emergency medical
services associate degree programs. Up to 25 scholarships will be awarded
for the 2010 academic year. Applications must be received at
International Headquarters by October 15th.
All-USA/All-PA
Jack Guistwhite – deadline is November 7th.
Coca-cola Scholarship – deadline is December 1st.
Nota Bene – deadline is December 4th.
It recognizes outstanding writing of Phi Theta Kappa
members and demonstrates to the literary public the academic
excellence and commitment to scholarship found at two-year colleges.
The first issue of Nota Bene was published in 1994; it has been
published annually ever since.

National Student Nurses' Association, Inc – deadline is December 30th.
General Scholarship Application Tips from Alumni
- Apply for financial aid, even if you do not want any loans. Often, it is required that students apply for financial aid prior to applying for scholarships.
- Review scholarship application and note all materials required. The materials required may vary from one application to another.
- Review deadline for filing scholarship application and allow yourself enough time to complete application, gather materials, and write an essay. (At a minimum schedule three weeks for the process.)
- Follow guidelines for writing essay. For example: length, formatting, and subject of essay.
- Do not make any assumptions. Ask questions of the appropriate contact for the scholarship.
- Read and follow the scholarship application directions. These directions may vary from one application to another.
- Have references on file that can be utilized. These references should include personal, professional (work related), and current professors. In some cases, the application may require a college administrator.
- Avoid using references that are more than a year old. Most applications require current references.
- Attach all required materials to the application.
- Review your materials to ensure that you have all required documents before submitting.
- Submit all required forms to the appropriate academic office prior to the required deadline.
